Set of watercolors/individual desired colors
Small paint brush
Card stock paper
X-Acto knife
Watercolor paper
Art tape

1. Before you begin, decide what you want your artwork to be about! I knew that I wanted something to do with a horse, so I set out searching the web for a silhouette. There are multiple things you can do. While doing this project, my room mate decided to use a stencil of a girl! Once you have found a silhouette of your liking, print it out to fit an 8 x 11 (standard letter size) piece of card stock paper.

2. This is the trickiest part of the entire project. Use your X-Acto knife to cut out your silhouette. It is really important that you pay attention to detail and work your way around every groove and curve. You want to be making your cuts on the outside of your shaded portion, so when you are finished, you are left with a hole where your picture used to be! Make sure to double check and fix any pieces left behind (or under cut) when you are finished.

3. Now to the fun part. Tape down the stencil onto your watercolor paper after you have positioned it where you want it. I found it beneficial to go ahead and center my print out on the computer, so I wouldn’t have to do any guesswork afterward. It is now time to use your water colors to create a color scheme of your choice! The advantage to this stage of the project is that you are free to mess up and experiment. Your stencil isn’t going anywhere, so if you find you don’t like your first attempt, keep on going until you have a winner!

Because you are using 8 x 11 paper for this project, framing it isn’t a hassle. All you need is an 8 x 10 frame! While this can become a whole other project in itself, like decorating your frame with fun colors and shapes, I popped my stencil art into a frame I had lying around from when I bought a million things from the dollar store I thought I would need “one day”. Turns out I was right!

There’s going to come a time in everyone’s life, multiple times, where you just need to stop, look around, and refresh. I am at that point right now. Especially growing up, you’re going to find yourself in a lot of ruts, faced with numerous decisions, and forced to make choices in a million different areas. But, you know what? Just stop. Stop thinking about all of those things and consider only things that would make you truly happy AND are reachable in the very near future. My list is taped to the back of my door to serve as a constant reminder of where I would like to be and what I would like to be doing/working towards.

When I am stressed out, I get very irritable and sensitive. My family and my boyfriend like to refer to it as “When Chelsea gets worked up…” I’ve decided that I should really focus on taking a deep breath and evaluating just how important the issue at hand is. I feel this will improve my attitude on a daily basis by leaps and bounds, while making the following goals even more attainable. I used to be a very “glass half full” thinker, but when not-so-great things happen over time, your perception on life changes without you hardly noticing, and you begin reacting to certain scenarios differently. That’s okay! Sometimes more wisdom than we ask for hits us right in the face all at one time. Just remember to make an effort to think positive above anything else. This, ultimately, is the most important goal on my list.

Even if you’re saying to yourself right now “My life is awesome, I don’t need to change anything!”, try to think of something you stopped doing that you used to like doing, or something that you have never done, but have always wanted to do. What do you have to lose? Nothing. If anything, whether it works out or not, you will be a better person from it. And as my parents have always told me: “At least you can say you tried.”

Us artsy fartsy types have a whole different kind of mess! This is my workspace… organized. Can you imagine what this table looks like when I pile work in progress atop another? Disastrous. If you’re anything like me, clutter drives you nuts. However, you find yourself constantly cleaning up a mess to see it semi-presentable for a couple days, then back to the condition it was before.

When I have company over, I’m always apologizing for the condition of my room, only for them to say “This is a mess?” Truth be told, your house/room CANNOT look like interior decorating photos you see in magazines. Why? Because you are a normal person and you have normal possessions! Sentimental photos, gifts, necessities, knick knacks, an abundance of clothes, heaps of supplies to satisfy your muse, and things you collect. Whenever I see pristine bedrooms with hardly anything in them, on the shelves, or hung to wall, I always think “All the junk they don’t want you to see is hiding in the closet.” It’s true. Where is the fun in that? Why wouldn’t you want to be surrounded by things that you love? For example: The polaroid box you see above, on the bottom shelf, DOES have a Button Land Camera in it. Why is that there? Because it’s incredibly old, and belonged to my father years ago, when he used it to take photos of crime scenes. There are things that we want to be near us, then there are things that have to be. Another example is that I have to have Luna’s dog crate in my room. I can’t shun her to the basement! While it is not the cutest thing in the world, I can’t change that it has to be there, no matter how much it bothers me that it is taking up space.

So, next time you’re looking at your room and are at a loss for words for how to go about cleaning and/or organizing it, remember while it’s nice to go off of interior design photos you find on Pinterest (everyone needs inspiration), don’t put things that mean a lot to you to the back of your closet. When someone walks into your room, they want to learn about what makes you… you.

Some of us were born with a little spunk (a few of us with a bit too much!) and some of us wish with everything we could muster the bravery to do something we don’t think we can. Anyone will tell you I’ve always been “opinionated”, and that has fooled a lot of people into thinking I’m not insecure about anything. WRONG! I’m pretty sure that would make me an alien of some sort.

Are you one of those people that’s always known exactly what you want to do in life? Or are you someone that’s driven yourself crazy trying to find a place to fit, bouncing from one interest to the next? Do you stand up for what you believe in, or do you think about all the things you wish you had the courage to say after the opportunity is over? Does it bother you when you think someone doesn’t like you, or do you believe it’s their loss? Do you stare at/cover up what you have appointed physical imperfections, or have you accepted that everyone (yes, even you) is beautiful in their own way?

It’s very hard to be empathetic when you’re so involved in how you feel. While there is some truth to the phrase “Someone, somewhere, has it worse.”, I don’t really believe that’s an effective way to motivate a person to reach for the stars, or find peace with who they are. If there’s anything I’ve learned about people, and from my own personal experiences, it’s that our peers and loved ones strengthen us. This is one of the very reasons I’ve learned that having a few close friends far exceeds the fulfillment of having lots of so-so friends. Those close friends love you, they know you, they are concerned of your best interest. The so-so guys? How are they helping you push forward in life? For example: This blog wouldn’t even exist if it weren’t for two very special people that encouraged me to share what I really like doing with the world. I’m sure a lot of you can probably understand that it’s a terrifying thing, putting something out there that means a lot to you, to potentially be criticized or shot down. With that, I realized that’s what a pure relationship is: Pushing your loved one to be the best that they can be! If one person believes in you, then whatever your heart desires is attainable.

Before anyone else has the chance to assure you of what I know they will, I wanted to let you know one very important thing.
You can do it.
No matter how big the dream, no matter how scary the confrontation may seem, you have everything it takes. So, don’t let anything stop you.

Now, my sweet pea, that’s one person. Get your tale out there and show ‘em what you got!
